More Than Just a Hobby: Hobby Crafts is a Life Saver
You got nothing to do on those hot sunny afternoons. You want to spend some bonding time with your kids. It’s a dragging day and for a couch potato like you, there’s nothing to watch on TV. You’re looking for something to occupy your time and at the same time, bring in some extra income. Why not take up a hobby craft, create something from those materials from your home and who knows, even start a small hobby craft business of yours?
Engaging in hobbies and crafts are perfect ways to spend your time instead of sitting in front of the TV all day. If you’re not the sporty type and who’d much prefer a more sedentary lifestyle, you can take up any of the million hobby craft ideas – from scrapbooking to knitting and quilting to crocheting and painting. Nothing beats seeing a ‘finished product’ from those times you spent knitting while watching TV. Others engage in hobby crafts as a form of relaxation and stress reliever. Some find comfort in painting or cross-stitching after a hard day’s work. Others would prefer a weekend afternoon affair with their beads, wire, or knitting tools.
For the parent, taking on a hobby craft is a perfect way to spend some worthwhile time with their kids. It’s also an avenue for bonding as both the parents and the kids work on a project. It is more proactive and dynamic as each ‘finished product’ is an expression of the kid and the parents’ collaboration, teamwork, creative juices and efforts. Not only do your kids get to learn a new skill, but you get to be part of their exploration and learning.
And lastly, many have made their simple, backyard hobby crafts into successful business ventures. Start selling those beads and jewelry you made to your friends and relatives, those knitted jackets to officemates, and those rugs and potholders to your neighbors. Soon enough, you’ll be attracting a market for your hand-made crafts.
Hobby Craft Ideas
Creativity is the key. As a hobby, you can always start doing what you love to do and from there, explore new things. You’ve always been good at drawing and painting. Well, start with making hand-painted invitation cards, birthday cards, Christmas cards. Or hand-paint that high school scrapbook of yours. There’s no limit to what you can do. Some adventurous types, on the other hand, would like to take on a hobby to learn a new skill. Have always wanted to learn how to knit? There are a hundred and one Idiot’s Guide and Beginner’s Manual on knitting. There’s no better time to start learning than now.
Just be Resourceful. You don’t even have to go beyond your kitchen or your backyard. Don’t throw away those coffee beans or used paper. You can make playdough and paper mache containers from them. Take inspiration from nature and pick up dried leaves and stones or pebbles and decorate those shoe boxes with these. Find another use for those left-over fabrics and pieces of cloth. Sew them together to create potholders and rugs. Or use them in your scrapbooks or in making a T-shirt quilt. Make creative photo holders with those hangers and clips stashed in your closet. Not only do you unleash those creative juices of yours. You also get to do a big favor to Mother Earth by recycling these materials and making them useful again.
From scrapbooking to painting to making hand-made cards, there’s also jewelry making, soap making, candle making, rug making, cross-stitching, knitting, quilting, scrapbooking, origami, and rubber stamping.
The final rule: Enjoy. Whatever the outcome is, it’s your work. Learn something new, make yourself productive, and most of all, enjoy! The good thing about these hobby crafts is that you’re not being paid to do them. You do it because you want to do it. There’s no pressure, just fun, fun and fun!
